‘Scrap the cap for all public sector staff’ - Maskey
The DUP-Tory pay cap should be lifted for all public sector workers immediately, not just a select few professions, Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey has insisted.
The West Belfast MP was speaking following reports that the British Government is preparing to scrap the one percent pay cap for police and prison officers.
He commented: “The Tory public sector pay cap has been a cynical and damaging attack on workers, and has been at the heart of their brutal austerity programme.
“It was also insulting to many workers to see the DUP turning up to ‘scrap the cap’ events despite having voted with the Tories to extend it back in June.
“The indications are that the Tories are now set to lift the cap on some public sector workers, namely police and prison officers. That simply isn’t good enough. It should be lifted immediately for all public sector staff and this ongoing assault on workers brought to an end.”
