Drogheda Rent Pressure Zone ‘only the first step in addressing the housing crisis in Louth’ – Munster
Speaking after the announcement that Drogheda has been designated as a Rent Pressure Zone, Sinn Féin TD for Louth and Meath East Imelda Munster has stressed the need for further, more radical measures to resolve the housing crisis in Louth.
Deputy Munster said:
“It is about time that the Minister for Housing recognised the hardship experienced by the people of Drogheda in recent years when it comes to paying for accommodation. In the past year rents in Co. Louth increased by 17.5% and the average rent is now at €1024 a month.
“This designation will restrict the rise in rent increases to a maximum of 4% annually. It will not solve the problem of unaffordable rent. Co. Louth has endured the largest annual increase in rent in the state. The consequences for people who are unable to afford the cost of these rents can be devastating.
“I have been calling on the Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy, and the previous Minister for Housing, to include Drogheda as a designated Rent Pressure Zone to afford the people of Drogheda with a basic level of protection from spiralling rents. I am glad that he has finally chosen to heed these calls.
“There is a state-wide crisis in housing and the government continues to fail those who are currently paying high rents, paying extortionate top ups to HAP landlords, waiting on housing lists and those who are homeless.
“Sinn Féin have tabled numerous Bills and amendments calling for the introduction of real rent certainty along these lines. Tenants need greater security of tenure.
“Rents in Louth have increased by 67.7% from their lowest rate and in the last number of years countless families have been left out in the cold because they cannot afford to pay rent. We need more social housing, and we need further measures to control and manage rent. This announcement is welcome as a first step, but the Minister has a long way to go if this crisis is to be resolved.”
