Contract of Policing Board Human Rights Advisor should not be terminated – Kelly

27 September, 2017 - by Gerry Kelly

Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly said today that the termination of the contract of the Policing Board's Human Rights Advisor should not have happened.

Gerry Kelly said:

"I have been recently informed that the Policing Boards Human Rights Advisor's contract has been terminated. This should not have happened.

“A human rights-based approach to policing is at the core of the Patten Recommendations and the setting up of the PSNI.

“The Policing Board is the main accountability mechanism for the police and without a Human Rights Advisor it cannot properly do its job.

“I welcome the fact that independent members have been able to continue their work on holding the PSNI to account.

“However, the Human Rights Advisor’s contract should have been extended at this time as it is a crucial component to the effective working of the Board.

“The decision not to renew the contract should be reversed.”
