Government cherry-picked reopening Stepaside over Rush Garda Station – O’Reilly

28 September, 2017 - by Louise O'Reilly TD

Speaking this afternoon, Sinn Féin TD for Dublin Fingal Louise O’Reilly has said she is astonished at the admittance by the acting Garda Commissioner Dónall Ó Cualáin that the decision not to re-open Rush Garda station, and others, was a political one taken by the Government.

Deputy O’Reilly said:

“The admittance at today’s hearing of the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee that a draft interim report recommended reopening both Stepaside Garda station and Rush Garda Station, but that Stepaside was cherry-picked for political reasons is astonishing and worrying.

“Under intense questioning from my colleague Deputy Mary Lou McDonald, the acting Garda Commissioner admitted to the PAC that a draft interim report on reopening Garda stations recommended that Rush Garda Station should re-open, amongst others, but for a political decision was taken by the Government to re-open Stepaside Garda Station but not Rush Garda Station.

“The closure of Rush Garda Station has left a void in the policing of North Fingal. Rush, due to its geographical location, is distinctly disadvantaged in regards to responses to calls, with the only fully operational Garda Station in Balbriggan.

“In recent months, serious violent crime has visited the community of Fingal and I believe that the revelations at today’s PAC committee show that the Gardaí and the Government know that Rush Garda Station should be reopened.

“The revelations today also make one wonder where the representation for Dublin Fingal was in Government when a report recommending the reopening of Rush Garda Station was being ignored.”
