Ennis meets IFA on sports development grant

28 September, 2017 - by Sinéad Ennis

Sinn Féin Culture Arts and Sport spokesperson Sinéad Ennis has reiterated her call on the Department for Education to reconsider its decision to close the sports development programme and reinstate the sports development grant.

The South Down MLA was speaking after a meeting with the Irish Football Association today.

Sinéad Ennis said:

“Sinn Féin’s position is clear, the cut to this frontline service must be reversed.

“Closing the Curriculum Sports Programme will have a hugely detrimental impact on GAA and IFA coaching schemes and could affect up to 50 jobs, 400 schools and approximately 40,000 children.

“This programme teaches children the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle and also helps to increase their confidence and social and interaction skills.

“Education must focus on the child's physical wellbeing as well as their academic advancement.

“The result of removing the sports development programme from schools is that some children simply will not partake in any form of physical activity throughout the week.

“The Department for Education needs to reconsider their decision to close the sports development programme and reinstate the sports development grant.

“Sinn Féin will continue to stand with the GAA, IFA and our schools to demand that this front line service be protected.”
