Adams calls for international mediation on Catalonia in Dáil
At Leaders' Questions today, Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD called for international mediation on the political situation in Catalonia and strongly condemned the violence carried out by the Spanish state against Catalan voters on Sunday.
Teachta Adams acknowledged the Taoiseach’s statement that he too recognises the need for dialogue between the Spanish administration and the Catalan government, but urged Taoiseach Varadkar to immediately make contact with the Spanish Prime Minister.
Speaking following the exchange in the Dáil, Teachta Adams said;
“The way to achieve positive progress on the political situation in Catalonia is through mediation and dialogue.
“That is what kick-started and sustained the peace process in Ireland.
“I acknowledge that the Taoiseach and I are in agreement on this matter. Dialogue works.
“The Taoiseach said he would convey these concerns to Prime Minister Rajoy at ‘the appropriate time’.
“The appropriate time is now. He should pick up the phone to his Spanish counterpart today.
“The Taoiseach should immediately use his influence and connections with Mr Rajoy to get him to accept international mediation as part of the necessary talks process between his government and the Catalan people.”
