Assisted Human Reproduction Bill needs to be drafted as soon as possible – O’Reilly

4 October, 2017 - by Louise O'Reilly TD

Speaking this morning, Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson Louise O’Reilly TD has welcomed the decision of the Government to finally draft a Bill on Assisted Human Reproduction (AHR) and associated research and called for no more delays on drafting the Bill.

Deputy O’Reilly said:

“Since I entered the Dáil, a huge number of couples and families have contacted me asking for the issue of assisted human reproduction to be raised with the Government and the Health Committee. There is a serious need for this legislation and I have seen and spoken with a number of the people such legislation will benefit.

“This is not a small group of people; there are a significant number of people and families this legislation will benefit.

“Over the past number of months, I have continuously lobbied the Government on when we would see this legislation and in spite of repeated delays I am very happy to see progress from the Minister on the Assisted Human Reproduction Bill.

“Families and couples have waited long enough for this legislation and we now need to see the Assisted Human Reproduction Bill drafted and published as soon as possible and for it to come before the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health for review so we can ensure that it will be fit for purpose and that it helps those people it is meant to help.

“This legislation is extremely important as regards the need to protect, promote and ensure the health and safety of parents, and children born as a result of AHR treatment, as well as other parties who may be involved such as donors and surrogates.

“This is a significant step on the road towards state funded fertility treatment and once we can ensure that the Assisted Human Reproduction Bill is fit for purpose and passed into law we can begin to work on that cause.”
