Fianna Fáil Budget proposals ‘an empty gesture’ – Doherty

6 October, 2017 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin TD and Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has said that the Fianna Fáil ‘wish list’ is an empty gesture by a party which is propping up the government. Deputy Doherty continued by saying that the document is bereft of costing, substantial proposals, or revenue raising measures.

The Donegal TD said:

“Fianna Fáil have presented a document that contributes nothing to the debate on how the Budget should be focused or implemented. ‘Priorities’ such as cutting the USC, raising the state pension, or reducing childcare costs without giving any target figures or costing is simply nonsensical and reeks of the fly by night financial policies of the Fianna Fáil of old.

“Fianna Fáil are promising everything to everyone without telling anyone what their proposals actually are. Motherhood and Apple Pie must have just fallen off the list. It is cynical, lazy, and frankly insulting to all those who suffered years of brutal austerity as a direct result of their actions in government.

“This is an empty gesture in an effort to pretend that Fianna Fáil are holding the government to account. If any other party produced such a superficial set of proposals, they would rightly be derided by the media as time wasters.

“Sinn Féin have quite clearly shown in our Alternative Budget 2018 how revenue could be raised and expenditure directed to tackle the crises in health, housing, and childcare, to name but a few of the very serious issues affecting ordinary families in Ireland. We choose our side; we are with the people. Fianna Fáil have chosen theirs. Fianna Fail are with Fine Gael. They are not interested in solving problems but maintaining their cosy consensus with the government which begs the question what are Fianna Fáil for?”
