Sinn Féin vigorously opposed to Sports Development Grant cut - Ennis
Sinn Féin culture arts and sport spokesperson Sinéad Ennis MLA said the cutting of the Sports Development Grant is the recent victim of relentless Tory austerity, enabled by the unconditional support of the DUP.
Sinéad Ennis said:
“Sinn Féin is vigorously opposed to the cutting of the Sports Development Grant. In recent weeks we have made clear to senior departmental officials our opposition to this and other education cuts.
“Sinn Féin has been to the fore in pressing senior civil servants to reinstate the Sports Development Programme.
“We believe that a unified and common-sense approach is needed by all parties in lobbying the Department of the Education to reverse these cuts instead of playing political football.
“Myself and party colleagues have met with the IFA and the GAA Ulster Council to discuss how to further co-ordinate our opposition to these cuts.
“Cutting the Sports Development Grant would have a direct impact on the employment of 50 GAA and IFA coaches through the Curriculum Sports Programme.
“It would also have a severely damaging impact on sporting projects within our local schools and to the tens of thousands of children who practically benefit from this funding.
“This cut is the most recent victim of relentless Tory austerity, enabled by the unconditional support of the DUP.
“Sinn Féin’s position is clear, the cut to this frontline service must be reversed.
“We remain fully committed to the restoration of the political institutions, but that must be on a sustainable basis. The institutions have to work for everyone and they must be based on respect, integrity and equality.
"It is time that the DUP ended their opposition to rights and equality so that we can get local ministers back in place and they should immediately withdraw their support for this austerity-driven Tory government."
