Theresa May's Tough Statements Don't Cut It - David Cullinane TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Brexit David Cullinane TD has said today that the Irish government must hold the line on the North and not be swayed by Tory infighting.
Deputy Cullinane said:
"The British government cannot pass the buck on Ireland. The Brexit mess is of its own creation."We are 17 months down the line and Britain still does not have a plan for Brexit.
"Theresa May's recent return to tough talk has nothing to do with the ongoing negotiations and everything to do with her disastrous conference speech and the threat she faces from Boris Johnson.
"The Irish government needs to see that and not be ruffled by a weak and indecisive leader.
"The current round of talks cannot end until Britain places a solution to the border on the table.
"That is the stance of the EU yet despite this it is clear that the Irish government is planning for a border and will concede the issue as a sop to Britain to move on the talks process.
"Its officials do not seem to realise that the border requires a political solution."
"It is by no means just about tariffs.
"I call on the government to publish the Revenue Commissioner's report on customs post-Brexit and to recommit itself to protecting the Good Friday Agreement in all its parts and ensuring that we have no return to a border on the island of Ireland."
