British government must respect rights and citizenship – Maskey
Paul Maskey MP has said the British government must respect the rights of minorities living in the north of Ireland, and those with Irish passports.
Speaking today following an engagement with the British Home Office on immigration and visas, the West Belfast MP raised a number of constituents’ concerns:
“The British Home Office have refused to grant citizenship or visas to a number of individuals because of their marriage or future marriage to those with Irish passports.
“Despite the Good Friday Agreement enshrining into law the right of citizens in the north of Ireland to define themselves as Irish or British, the British government is clearly not treating these identities with the equality they deserve.
“The British government must treat with respect and dignity Irish citizenship in the north, and the rights protected in the Good Friday Agreement for citizens to define their identity as they see fit.”
