Racism has no place in West Belfast – McCann

26 October, 2017 - by Fra McCann

Sinn Féin MLA Fra McCann has said that racist attacks on a refugee family living in West Belfast are despicable and need to stop immediately.

Speaking after attacks on the Arnous family who have lived in West Belfast as a result of having to flee their home in Syria Fra McCann said:

“The attacks are an absolute disgrace. To subject a family who have suffered so much to attacks on their home and racist abuse is entirely unacceptable and it must end immediately.

“These actions are the actions of a few. They are racist and are not reflective of this community.

“Sinn Féin have been working closely with the family in terms of providing support and bring an end to these attacks.

“We have been in contact with a number of groups and agencies including the PSNI, Community Restorative Justice and the Clonard Residents Association for help to allow the family to feel safe in their own home.

“Racism has no place in our society and we will stand firmly against this. The Arnous family are welcome in West Belfast and we will continue to support them in whatever way we can.”
