Minister Harris fails to even reach his own low targets - Louise O'Reilly TD
Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson Deputy Louise O’Reilly has called out the Minister for Health Simon Harris for failing to meet the low targets he set for himself when he took office almost 17 months ago.
Teachta O’Reilly said:
“In May 2016 when Minister Harris took office he said that one of his first main priorities would be improving the quality of hospital food.
“While this is a worthwhile endeavour and an issue which needs to be addressed, the reality is that the Minister hasn’t addressed the problem, despite saying it would be one of his first priorities.
“The latest episode of inappropriate food being served to a patient arose this week where a 37 week pregnant woman was admitted to Cork University Hospital as part of an unplanned stay suffering from high blood pressure.
"It was the second time in a week where the woman had to be admitted for the same condition.
“During her stay this woman was served a portion of chips, two sausages, and a rasher for her dinner. This was a completely inappropriate meal to serve to a pregnant woman suffering from high blood pressure.
“The episode is a microcosm of Minister Harris’ tenure as Health Minister – he is failing on the little things as well as the big things.
“He sets himself some of the lowest and unimaginative targets yet fails to even meet these. It is a ludicrous situation.
“One of the most significant problems in our health service is that the Minister is not legislatively responsible for the delivery of health services.
"Until the Minister for Health is legislatively responsible for the delivery of our health service, it will continue to fail.
“In the meantime it would behove the Minister to put his shoulder to the wheel and address what he said was one of his first priorities almost 17 months ago.”
