Bad government policy at the root of transport chaos - Gerry Adams TD
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has said "bad government policy is at the heart of the transport chaos affecting hundreds of thousands of citizens today."
Mr Adams made the remarks as as workers at Iarnród Eireann began a series of one-day strikes.
Teachta Adams said;
"The workers at Iarnród Eireann are looking for fairness. They have not had a pay-rise in ten years despite record revenues and substantial increases in passenger numbers.
"The financial problems at the company are not the fault of the workers. They have been caused by a policy of chronic underinvestment pursued by successive governments.
"As with last year's bus strikes, Minister Ross has washed his hands of the situation. He is an absentee Minister.
“The Government is the sole shareholder; it also has a duty and responsibility to ensure that our public services function properly and effectively. It is failing in this.
"Instead of sticking their heads in the sand, Minister Ross and the government must face up to the challenges facing the state's public transport network.
"The system needs investment and it needs the government to take a central and pro-active role in addressing the issues at the heart of the problem."
