Adams comments on jailing of Catalan ministers

2 November, 2017 - by Gerry Adams TD

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has strongly criticised the Spanish government for the jailing of eight Catalan ministers on charges of rebellion, sedition and misuse of public funds, saying that this act can only serve to deepen to deepen the crisis.

Teachta Adams said;

“The eight Catalan Ministers have all been imprisoned without the possibility of bail. This is the sanction imposed on democratically elected representatives who acted on the mandate given to them by the Catalan people.

“Dialogue must be the avenue pursued by both parties in the respect of Catalan independence. Jailing elected representatives is not the answer.

“Internationally mediated negotiations are the best way to find a peaceful resolution. This aggressive action by the Spanish Government will only deepen the crisis.”
