Stardust families deserve truth and justice – Denise Mitchell TD
Sinn Féin TD for Dublin Bay North Denise Mitchell has said relatives of the 48 people who died in the Stardust fire of 1981 in Artane deserve the full truth about what happened that night and expressed her disappointment at news that a report published today recommends no new Commission of Inquiry into the tragedy.
Commenting after a brief meeting with some of the families of the victims, Deputy Mitchell said:
“I first of all want to express my solidarity, sympathy and support to the Stardust families at this very difficult time. The Stardust Relatives and Victims Committee are deeply disappointed with the recommendations of this report which states that a new commission of inquiry into the tragedy is unwarranted.
“It has been 36 years since those young people went out to a Valentine’s night disco and never came home. For 36 years their families have been campaigning for the full truth about what happened that night. They have also raised serious questions about how the institutions of the State investigated this tragedy.
“The families and their legal team will now take time to study this report in-depth, as will we. We in Sinn Féin will continue to support the campaign for truth and justice for the victims of the Stardust tragedy.”
