Taoiseach Must Be Prepared To Veto To Protect Irish Interest - David Cullinane TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Brexit, David Cullinane, said today that the Taoiseach's overtures to the British prime minister on the Brexit negotiations is sending the wrong message to a dysfunctional government.
Deputy Cullinane said:"The Conservative Party is in disarray. They have no plan for Brexit, no negotiation strategy, and no clear objectives outside of avoiding open conflict among Tory Ministers.
"Theresa May is a lame-duck prime minister who has to sack cabinet members almost as quickly as she appoints them.
"More importantly, Britain has made no concessions nor outlined any clear roadmap as to how to avoid a border on island of Ireland.
"Yet Taoiseach Varadkar has decided to offer an olive branch to Theresa May when there is nothing on the table in return.
"There is more to international negotiation than film references and socks.
"The Taoiseach must be prepared to use the government veto on moving on to trade talks unless the British government needs to come up with detailed plans to protect the agreements and ensure that there is no EU frontier across Ireland.
"The Taoiseach needs to secure Irish interests and stop pandering to the hard-right in the Tory party."
