‘Department must clarify minibus assurance’ - Lynch
Sinn Féin has called on the Department of Infrastructure to provide clarity on its statement that the majority of community and voluntary organisations will not be affected by changes to minibus regulations which came into effect this week.
The party’s transport spokesperson Sean Lynch was commenting after the department said it expects the majority of organisations in the community and voluntary sector to ‘be unaffected’.
“The department should explain how it came to that conclusion because there is a great deal of concern right across the community and voluntary sector that these changes will greatly inhibit their ability to provide transport services.
“In our view, the Department has a duty to protect these services and while it is welcome if they are now saying the majority will not be affected by minibus licence changes, they need to go further and explain how this is the case and what protections are in place.
“There are also significant concerns that teachers and education services will be badly affected and we are urging the Department of Education and the Education Authority to protect services that schools provide for children.
“Sinn Féin will be meeting with both the Department of Education and the Department for Infrastructure to raise these concerns and seek clarification on these issues. "
