Minister Humphreys must leave no cultural institution behind in harassment dialogue – Tóibín

9 November, 2017 - by Peadar Tóibín TD

Minister Heather Humphreys will be meeting with representatives Irish theatre organisations and the Arts Council next week to deal with the issues of harassment and bullying in the workplace with regards the arts sector.

Minister Humphreys is organising the meeting due to “recent alarming allegations and reports of sexual harassment and bullying” at the Gate Theatre.

Sinn Féin TD and Culture spokesperson Peadar Tóibín has urged the Minister to broaden out the scope to include other cultural institutions under the aegis of her department.

 Deputy Tóibín said:

“I welcome this decision. However, I urge the government to broaden the process and include other cultural intuitions in this discussion. There has been a long running difficulty in the National Museum of Ireland. There is now a real opportunity to get to the heart of this.

“I have repeatedly brought such reports of a serious, similar nature to the Minister which she has continually dismissed by saying that ‘it would not be appropriate for me to intervene directly in human resources issues’.

“I applaud the Minister’s decision to now intervene directly and show leadership on this very serious issue. This is an ideal opportunity to identify systemic problems within the sector and to fix them but it Is vital that the Minister does not leave any organisation behind.”
