Sinn Féin MLAs to meet health secretary

15 November, 2017 - by Órlaithí Flynn

Sinn Féin MLAs Órlaithí Flynn and Caoimhe Archibald will today meet with the Permanent Secretary of the Department of Health to make representations on behalf of women from across the north suffering serious side effects from vaginal mesh implants.

Speaking ahead of the meeting Caoimhe Archibald MLA said:

"We have met with the Permanent Secretary previously and will be following up on what progress has been made to ensure women suffering adverse effects from the procedure receive the necessary treatment.”

Órlaithí Flynn MLA added:

"The physical and emotional pain these women have had to endure is terrible. It’s important that the health and wellbeing needs of women affected by mesh implants are met as a matter of urgency.

"We meet with several women recently and they raised further concerns that we will be putting to the Permanent Secretary and seeking clarity on.

“Sinn Féin will continue to support patients afflicted by surgical complications. All those affected should have immediate access to the appropriate treatment.

"Sinn Féin is calling for a moratorium on the use of surgical mesh implants and a public inquiry into their use.”
