Assistance must be provided to flooding victims as soon as possible – Nolan

23 November, 2017

Sinn Féin TD for Offaly and North Tipperary Carol Nolan has called on the Government to ensure that victims of flooding receive financial assistance as soon as possible.

Teachta Nolan said:

“I would like to extend my solidarity to the people and communities affected by flooding in Laois and Offaly.

“I welcome the fact that that the Government has announced that the Humanitarian Assistance scheme will be provided to those affected by flooding and I call on them to make this funding available as soon as possible.

“I understand that this funding will be made available to assist people whose homes have been damaged and who are not in a position to meet costs for basic and essential items and some structural repairs.

“In the run up to Christmas, with up to 40 families evacuated in Mountmellick, it is vital to ensure that this funding reaches communities as soon as possible.

“I understand that some of the structural damage was caused to walls near rivers which had been weakened for some time prior to the flooding, a scheme must be put in place to assist homeowners and communities in strengthening flood defence in order to prevent flood damage where possible. Drainage schemes must be implemented as soon as possible in all towns which are located near rivers.

“I intend to raise this matter in the Dáil at the earliest opportunity in order to ensure that those affected are assisted as soon as possible and adequate flood defences are put in place.”
