Humanitarian, not military solution needed to refugee crisis - Anderson

23 November, 2017 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the EU should support humanitarian rather than military efforts to tackle the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean.

Martina Anderson said:

"Today at the European Parliament's Committee on Petitions, Spanish photojournalist César Dezfuli presented a petition highlighting the abuses of Libyan Coastguard when dealing with refugees fleeing war and persecution.

"The harrowing images show the brutality meted out by EU-funded agencies off the Libyan coast.

"The also show those who have made it to Italian detention centres and the challenges refugees still face at that stage.

"This is clearly a humanitarian crisis and needs a humanitarian solution, not a military one.

"The EU must focus its attentions on supporting humanitarian efforts and not fund agencies which add to the misery of refugees trying to flee war and conflict seeking a new life in Europe."
