Government failure of Magdalene women is shameful – Mitchell

23 November, 2017 - by Denise Mitchell TD

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Children and Youth Affairs Denise Mitchell TD has welcomed the recommendations of a report by Ombudsman Peter Tyndall calling for the re-examination of a decision to exclude some women from the Magdalene Restorative Justice Scheme.

Deputy Mitchell said:

“It is absolutely unacceptable and bizarre to see women who were undertaking forced labour while deprived of their freedom and living in convents, often on the same grounds as the 12 Institutions covered by the scheme, being excluded from the restorative justice scheme.

“The Ombudsman’s report also raises concerns over a ‘flawed administrative process’ within the Department. This included the Department failing to take any steps to ensure women who lack the capacity to look after their own affairs were included. This is deeply worrying and shameful.

“The women who were exploited and used to work in these laundries deserve redress. They should not have to face further distress because of restrictively narrow interpretations of eligibility and technicalities.”
