‘Mesh ban should be implemented here’ - Flynn

27 November, 2017 - by Órlaithí Flynn

Sinn Féin MLA Órlaithí Flynn has called for any NHS ban on controversial vaginal mesh implants to also be implemented here.

The West Belfast MLA was speaking following reports that the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is to recommend banning mesh implants in England.

“Sinn Féin has been engaging with women from across the north suffering serious side effects from vaginal mesh implants,” she commented.

"The physical and emotional pain they have had to endure is terrible which is why our recent Ard Fhéis passed a motion calling for a moratorium on the use of mesh implants.

“It is now understood that NICE are set to recommend banning their use in NHS treatments in England.

“That would be a clear recognition of the dangers posed by mesh implants and we would call for any such ban to be replicated by the health service here.”
