Be part of building a new Ireland

‘A5 announcement will provide construction boost’ - McGuigan

28 November, 2017 - by Philip McGuigan

Confirmation that work is set to begin on the A5 Derry to Dublin road upgrade will provide a much-needed boost to the construction industry, Sinn Féin Infrastructure spokesperson Phillip McGuigan has said.

The North Antrim MLA was commenting after the Department of Infrastructure today published its decision to proceed with the first phase of the project following a lengthy planning process.

“The A5 dual carriageway is an essential lifeline for addressing the infrastructural deficit west of the Bann and for connecting the North West region of Ireland to Dublin.

“It will also be a huge benefit to our construction industry, given that this phase of the route, from Newbuildings to Strabane, is a £150million project.

“It also represents the realisation of the commitment within the Fresh Start Agreement to proceed with the A5, funded on an all-Ireland basis by the Executive and the Dublin Government.

“The importance of this project has never been more important given the implications of Brexit.

“The Derry and the North West region needs to reinforce its connections with the capital city through projects such as the A5 rather than the imposition of border tariffs and other financial penalties which Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson and others are working on daily to try to counteract by securing Designated Status for the north.”
