Sinn Féin highlight Brexit construction fears

29 November, 2017 - by Caoimhe Archibald

Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald has said Brexit will have negative implications on the availability of a skilled workforce for the construction industry.

The East Derry MLA said:

"The Construction Industry Brexit Manifesto has highlighted the shortage of skilled workers within the industry and the continued need to be able to recruit workers from overseas post-Brexit while the skills shortage is addressed through training in the longer term.

"A survey published by the Federation of Master Builders showed that three out of five small to medium-sized construction businesses were having difficulties recruiting staff including carpenters, joiners and bricklayers so this is a problem that needs to be addressed.

"Construction businesses in the north have also previously warned of the implications of a border being imposed as most construction businesses transport materials, products and labour north south on a regular basis.

"This damage to the economy can be avoided by securing designated special status for the north."
