Kelly welcomes recommendations to tackle hate crime

5 December, 2017 - by Gerry Kelly

Gerry Kelly has welcomed the recommendation from Criminal Justice Inspectorate (CJI) with respect to PSNI training and the recognition that the interface between victims of hate crimes, witnesses, perpetrators and police personnel is the determining factor in how the crimes and incidents are dealt with by the rest of the criminal justice system and beyond.

He also welcomed the recommendation that the Department of Justice (DoJ) should as soon as possible conduct a review of the existing legislative response to hate crime to provide clarity.

Mr Kelly said:

"As a society we need to improve the response both to the incitement to hatred that can lead to hate crime and to hate crime itself.

"No one should be targeted because of their race, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation or transgender identity”
