Mother and Baby Home investigation delay 'deeply disappointing and frustrating' - Denise Mitchell TD

5 December, 2017 - by Denise Mitchell TD

Sinn Féin Spokesperson for Children and Youth Affairs Denise Mitchell TD has said the announcement that the Report by the Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes has been delayed by 12 months will be deeply frustrating and disappointing to many survivors.

Speaking on Tuesday evening, Deputy Mitchell said:

“It is deeply disappointing that survivors will now have to wait an extra 12 months before the Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes completes its report. Survivors have waited decades for truth and justice and this will add to their frustration.

“From speaking to survivors recently I understand how eagerly they were anticipating the Final Report after the Christmas break. Many of these survivors are very elderly citizens, and hundreds have already passed away without ever seeing justice for the horrors they endured in these institutions.

“I hope the Minister ensures that the Commission is provided with all the resources it needs to complete its investigation,” she said.

Deputy Mitchell welcomed the Minister's announcement of the establishment of a Collaborative Forum as well as her decision to invite the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence to Ireland.
