Sinn Féin pull proposal of special meeting

6 December, 2017 - by Jim McVeigh

Sinn Féin have decided to pull a proposal for a special meeting of Belfast City Council to deal with the disastrous impact of Brexit on the Belfast and Derry and Strabane council’s joint bid for European Capital of Culture in 2023.

Cllr Jim McVeigh said:

“We decided to pull our proposal for a special council meeting of Belfast City Council tonight following this week’s full council meeting where it was agreed unanimously that the council will lead a cross-party delegation, along with business and civic leaders to Brussels to lobby to have the decision to exclude us from the European Capital competition.

“We welcome this decision and will be urging the Chief Executive to organise the delegation to Brussels as soon as possible.

“The North of Ireland is clearly a special case given the majority of citizens here voted to remain in the EU and wish to be treated as European citizens.”
