Mullan seeks assurances on special educational needs provision
Sinn Féin MLA Karen Mullan has sought assurances from the Education Authority that children with special educational needs (SEN) have access to appropriate provision and support in schools particularly children with autism.
Karen Mullan said:
"I have been working with families and children with autism and special educational needs. All of those families have highlighted the need for greater provision and support for their children.
“It is essential that the Education Authority listens to children with special educational needs and their families and take steps to ensure their needs and requirements are properly addressed.
"I have sought assurances from them that there will be improvements in assessments, classroom assistants and early years intervention.
"I emphasised that schools need to be better equipped to deal with the needs of pupils with special educational needs and autism.
"I am pleased the Authority has agreed to explore ways of providing additional support to children.
"Special educational needs provision is a priority for Sinn Féin. We have argued the case for investment in resources to provide support to SEN children and young people. It is essential that the Education Authority acts in the interest of these children and their families."
