Sinn Féin committed to reducing discrimination and inequality in the workplace

7 December, 2017 - by Megan Fearon

Sinn Féin equality spokesperson Megan Fearon has said Sinn Féin is committed to reducing discrimination and inequality in the workplace.

The Newry and Armagh MLA was speaking after the Industrial Tribunal found that Gallaghers had discriminated against an employee on the grounds of his age as he was excluded from its enhanced severance package when its factory in Ballymena closed.

Megan Fearon said:

“The tribunal found that the employee suffered both direct and indirect discrimination on the grounds of age.

“Any discrimination in the workplace is unacceptable. Older workers contribute greatly to the workforce and their career opportunities should not be negatively affected.

“They are entitled to the same consideration as workers of other ages when decisions regarding their contracts, performance standards, continued employment or in this case redundancy are being made.

“Sinn Féin is committed to reducing discrimination and inequality in the workplace.”
