Fair work needs proper legislation not a band aid - David Cullinane TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson for workers' rights David Cullinane TD said today that the government's zero hour Bill is deeply flawed and needs substantial revision in order to address the real needs of ordinary workers.
Speaking today, Deputy Cullinane said:
"The government has finally published its Employment Bill 2017 and unfortunately it retains a lot of the problems that from its earlier draft.
"The Bill will not ban zero-hour contracts, despite saying it will.
"It has an 18-month look-back period when applying for banded hours which is deeply unfair.
"The banded hours themselves are too wide to be effective for employees.
"Fine Gael has once again brought forward legislation that will do little for ordinary workers, while giving all the appearance of doing so.
"The Bill is also entirely unnecessary as my own bill has already been through pre-legislative scrutiny."If the Minister was genuine about workers' rights she would take on board the findings of the jobs committee and legislate for proper workers rights today."
