DUP increasingly out of step as support grows for special status – O'Neill
Sinn Féin Leader in the north Michelle O’Neill MLA said today that the DUP is increasingly out of step with the wishes of the majority of people in the north and actively working against their interests.
The Mid Ulster MLA was speaking after the results of a Lucidtalk poll were released today which showed a majority in favour of Sinn Féin’s position of designated special status for the north within the EU.
Michelle O’Neill said:
“The DUP do not represent the views of the people of the north and are actively working against their interests.
“They are increasingly out of step with the majority of people in the north who voted last June to remain in the European Union.
“This has been further demonstrated in the findings of today’s Lucidtalk poll, which shows that support is increasing for the Sinn Féin position of designated special status within the EU.
“For this reason it’s essential that the Irish government robustly defends the interests of all the people of Ireland north and south during the crucial period of negotiations ahead.”
Editor’s note: The key findings of the latest Lucidtalk poll are;
- 57.8 per cent support special status for the north within the EU
- A majority of 47.9 per cent support the north remaining in the EU by joining a united Ireland
- 52.4 per cent believe there will be a reduction in rights as a result of Brexit
- 75.8 per cent believe EU standards should be maintained post-Brexit
