Molloy - British arms sales fuelling conflict and oppression

14 December, 2017 - by Francie Molloy

British arms sales to despotic and oppressive regimes are fuelling conflict and devastation in vulnerable regions, Sinn Féin MP Francie Molloy has said.

The Mid Ulster MP was speaking after chairing a panel of Bahraini opposition figures and anti-arms campaigners such as the Campaign Against the Arms Trade (CAAT) in Westminster.

Francie Molloy MP said:

“Britain has rarely played a constructive or supportive role in conflict-ridden regions in the world, but it is quite another thing to profit from this war and destitution.

“The British government’s longstanding arms trade relationships with autocratic regimes are an endorsement of the war crimes, repression and human rights abuses they carry out with British weapons.

“If the British government wish to posture as guardians of basic rights and democracy, they must end their complicity in escalating conflicts through sales of British guns and in some of the worst rights abuses on earth.”
