Sinn Féin welcomes the launch of the Oireachtas Committee report on the 8th Amendment.

Sinn Féin TD’s Louise O’Reilly and Jonathan O’Brien, alongside Senator Paul Gavan have been consistent advocates for the repeal of the 8th Amendment throughout their time as members of the committee.

Speaking at the launch of the committee’s report today, Teachta O’Reilly said:

"Today represents a significant and historic day for women across Ireland. Sinn Féin endorses and will vote in favour of this report.

"I want to pay tribute to all of the witnesses who came before the committee, their experiences and expert evidence was invaluable.

"The evidence we heard from medical experts across Ireland and the world was not only heart-breaking, but also highly informative.

"The evidence we heard from the vast majority of expert witness was clear and concise; the constitution is no place for a women’s health and the 8th amendment must go.

"It’s no coincidence that the conclusions from our own committee report mirror in so many respects the conclusions of the citizens' assembly. Ultimately the evidence was conclusive in both circumstances.

"For decades women have been let down by a political system that has failed to meet their medical needs, but today is a step in the right direction to correct that injustice.

"The recommendations of the Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth amendment send a message to the women of Ireland that we are on your side."
