Gildernew raises domiciliary care concerns

20 December, 2017 - by Colm Gildernew

Sinn Féin spokesperson for Carers Colm Gildernew has raised concern over the brevity of many domiciliary care visits.

Commenting today after the Department of Health published statistics on domiciliary care services for adults, the Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA said: "The statistics released today show worrying levels of very short domiciliary care calls to individuals.

"Three in ten visits were for a duration of 15 minutes or less.

"I am concerned that such short visits are not conducive to achieving best patient outcomes.

"It is also concerning that the number of domiciliary care contact hours provided by Trusts, and the number of people receiving these services, have both decreased by 3 percent compared to the previous year.

"It is clear that domiciliary care services and those delivering adult social care generally are under considerable pressure but the release of the Expert Panel Review of Adult Social Care should be seen as the beginning of a much needed discussion on how to transform these services so they achieve the best outcomes for people who need them."
