British government promises of protecting farmers are empty - Gildernew

4 January, 2018 - by Michelle Gildernew

Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew has said that the British government's commitment to protect farmers after Brexit has no basis in reality.

The Fermanagh South Tyrone MP said:

“The British government’s professed commitments to protect local farmers will be met with bewilderment in the north of Ireland.

"The Tory-DUP Brexit pact are committed only to dragging the north out of the EU, leaving rural farmers without almost 90% of their funding, and potentially devastating the agri-food industry.

"The only Tory solution thus far has been the pursuit of free trade deals which threaten to undermine food quality, safety standards and industry practices.

"Designated Special Status for the north within the EU is the only means by which we can protect local farmers and our rural communities."
