Gaelscoil An Lonnáin decision 'politically motivated' - Mullan
Sinn Féin Education spokesperson Karen Mullan has said she is appalled at the Department of Education's intent to appeal a High Court ruling overturning a decision by a DUP minister to refuse a proposal that would see Gaelscoil An Lonnáin to move to new premises.
Speaking after visiting Gaelscoil An Lonnáin with West Belfast MLA Fra McCann, Karen Mullan commented:
"Today I visited the current site of Gaelscoil An Lonnáin on the Falls Road and it is abundantly clear that premises are inadequate.
"This issue could have been resolved but in June 2016, then DUP Education Minister Peter Weir refused a proposal for the school to move to a new state of the art facility at the former St. Comgall’s site.
"That refusal was subsequently quashed by the High Court but I am appalled that the Department is intent on appealing a court ruling that would have allowed the school to move premises.
"The Department of Education should not be standing over an anti-Irish, politically motivated-decision by a DUP Minister that has already been thrown out by the courts.
"Children in Irish medium schools are entitled to equality of treatment and are entitled to be educated in modern school accommodation.
"I have requested a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Department of Education seeking answers on this matter and why the Department are continuing to stand over this decision."
