Archibald expresses concern at economic inactivity rates
Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald has expressed concern at the latest economic inactivity rates hare and called for a rethink of strategies to address the issue.
The East Derry MLA was speaking after the latest Labour Force Survey statistics showed that almost 30% of working age people here are economically inactive.
“Clearly previous interventions such as the ‘Enabling Success’ strategy launched by then ministers Stephen Farry and Arlene Foster are not having the required impact,” she commented.
“There should be a review of this strategy as it clearly isn’t working and this should be done as part of a wider consideration of the overall economic and industrial strategy.
“None of this can be seen in isolation however and the impact of austerity cuts imposed by the Tory government is also hampering the ability of public agencies to put the required resources and supports in place to drive down economic inactivity rates.
“It is also essential that the figures relating to students are removed from these statistics as their inclusion can present a false picture.”
