Horrors of the Holocaust must never be forgotten - Mullan

25 January, 2018 - by Karen Mullan

Sinn Féin Education spokesperson Karen Mullan MLA, has said the genocide and horrors of the Holocaust must never be forgotten and that people must be educated on the dangers of extremism.

Commenting after attending a Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration in Derry’s Millennium Forum, Karen Mullan said:

"Today is Holocaust Memorial Day, commemorating one of the most horrific crimes in human history.

"The planned genocide and extermination of the Jewish population by the Nazi regime during the Second World War is one of the bleakest moments in humanity.

"This brutal plan saw over six million Jewish men women and children murdered, alongside other groups and individuals who spoke out or tried to resist fascism and who also experienced the horrors of Nazi concentration camps.

"In today’s society we are seeing a resurgence of far right groups in Europe and anti-Semitism, including violent attacks.

"As we remember all those killed in the Holocaust and in other more recent genocides in places like Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur, it is important that we not only honour the dead but that we educate future generations of the dangers of extremism.

"Collectively we must unite to challenge discrimination, sectarianism, racism and homophobia from our society and never forget the horrors that led to the Holocaust and murder of so many innocent people."
