Maskey expresses solidarity with jailed HDP leaders
Sinn Féin MP for West Belfast, Paul Maskey, has extended solidarity with the HDP and progressive elements of civic society in the face of growing authoritarianism and repression from Erdogan’s regime.
Maskey was speaking today in Westminster on a panel of international delegates about his experiences as an observer of the trial of two HDP co-chairs imprisoned by Turkish authorities.
Paul Maskey MP said:
“The rights of Turkish people, and the integrity of its democratic institutions, have been under attack from the Erdogan regime for some time.
“In my recent role as international observer in Turkey I witnessed these attacks. Those offering a hopeful alternative to state repression and persecution, such as the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (HDP), have faced arbitrary arrest and relentless persecution.
“On behalf of Sinn Féin I wish to extend solidarity to those struggling for human rights and democracy in Turkey.
"The politically loaded charges against HDP co-chairs, and all charges designed to silence and intimidate voices critical of the Erdogan regime, must be dropped immediately.”
