All citizens entitled to equality - Fearon

31 January, 2018 - by Megan Fearon

Sinn Fein equality spokesperson Megan Fearon has welcomed a survey report produced by the Equality Commission on social attitudes and perceptions of equality.

The Newry and Armagh MLA said the report was “an important barometer which showed where society in the north is at in terms of opinions on equality and human rights.”

Megan Fearon added:

“It is encouraging that there has been an increase in more positive attitudes towards the LGB and T communities however it is concerning that the report has highlighted prejudices towards other minority groups exist.

“The report identified five groups that are viewed negatively travellers, Roma, asylum seekers and refugees, migrant workers and minority ethnic groups.

“In the last mandate Sinn Fein supported The Racial Equality strategy an essential part of the overall equality agenda. The strategy demonstrates a commitment to eliminate discrimination, promote equal opportunities and develop good relations.

“The report also showed that people with mental health difficulties are also perceived in a negative manner.

“Sinn Féin believe that prejudice, discrimination and intolerance in all forms must be rejected.

“As a society we must do more to more to promote greater social cohesion and equality of opportunity for everyone regardless of race, nationality and disability.

“Sinn Fein is a party committed to the equality agenda. We believe that all citizens regardless of race, nationality or disability should be treated as equals. We are all entitled to equality and human rights.”
