Minister must face up to his responsibilities on CIÉ pensions - Imelda Munster TD
Imelda Munster TD, Sinn Féin spokesperson for Transport, Tourism and Sport, has today lambasted Government and Minister Shane Ross TD for their failure to protect CIÉ pensions.
Deputy Munster said:
"There is a statutory requirement on the board of CIÉ to keep the company's pension funds solvent.
"Despite this, it appears that since 2009 the funds have been in deficit.
"However, the requirement to keep them solvent is one that comes from the Minister for Transport himself. Minister Ross cannot wash his hands of this issue.
"This is one of oversight and accountability, pure and simple, and one that has been known about by successive transport ministers, included Taoiseach Varadkar and Finance Minister Donohoe.
"Minister Ross cannot hide behind CIÉ here.
"He has to face up to his responsibilities to the 10,000 workers in CIÉ who are in a vulnerable space at this moment because for eight years the Department of Transport appears to have allowed CIÉ to ignore a ministerial order, a statutory instrument.
"I am calling on Minister Ross to explain himself to the Transport Committee and for the government to do what it is required to do by law - to protect ordinary workers and pensioners in CIÉ.”
