‘Families vindicated by damning report’ - Sheehan

31 January, 2018 - by Pat Sheehan

Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson Pat Sheehan has described the outcome of the Hyponatraemia Inquiry as a vindication of the families’ long campaign for truth and called for the swift implementation of the recommendations.

The West Belfast MLA was speaking after a 14-year inquiry into the deaths of five children in hospitals across the North found that four of them were avoidable.

Pat Sheehan said:

“My thoughts are with the parents and families of those who lost children due to Hyponatraemia-related deaths have had to wait 14 years for the inquiry to publish its findings.

“This has been a long and painful wait for the truth about what happened to their loved ones – a wait they should not have had to endure for so long.

“But today the Inquiry has delivered a damning verdict, having found evidence of negligence, cover-up and shocking treatment of grieving families.

“That is entirely unacceptable and lessons have to be learned. A tragedy like this can never be allowed to happen again so we will be pursuing the swift implementation of the inquiry’s recommendations.”
