Gildernew – Equality for women still elusive

8 February, 2018 - by Michelle Gildernew

Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew has said much remains to be done to secure economic, social and political equality for women, 100 years after a partial franchise was secured for women.

The Fermanagh South Tyrone MP was speaking after an event in Stormont celebrating ‘Inspirational Women’.

Michelle Gildernew MP said:

“Today women enjoy universal suffrage. But our equal place within society remains blocked by a legacy of patriarchy.

“The political establishment in Ireland remains dominated by men, and while women have the vote, the reins of government, business and civic society are still largely in the hands powerful men.

“If powerful and inspirational women have taught us anything, it’s that the privileged and powerful never grant rights and progress, they must be fought for.

“Women today must constantly challenge the traditions and institutions that view us as unequal or inferior. Only then can we know true equality.”
