European report highlights British government’s Irish Language failures – Ó Muilleoir

22 February, 2018 - by Máirtín Ó Muilleoir

Sinn Féin has said the failure of the British Government and the DUP to deliver on language rights is being internationally recognised.

Speaking on recent recommendations by the Council of Europe, regarding the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, Máirtín Ó Muilleoir said:

"This is not the first time the British Government has faced international criticism over its failure to protect citizens' rights.

"Their failure to deliver on a previous agreement to Acht Gaeilge, made in the St Andrew's Agreement, and their approach to these matters in the more recent talks process, face just criticism in the recommendations made by the Council of Europe.

"The British Government continue to facilitate the DUP blocking rights for Irish speakers and blocking resolution on language matters.

"Now is a time for political leadership. The British Government should not facilitate the blocking of rights – rights which are enjoyed everywhere else on these islands.” CRÍOCH/ENDS
