Kearney calls for civic campaign to defend Good Friday Agreement

23 February, 2018 - by Declan Kearney

Sinn Féin National Chairperson, Declan Kearney MLA, has called for a national civic campaign to defend the Good Friday Agreement and demand its full implementation.

He said:

"Recently some MPs in England and others within the British media have mounted a public campaign against the Good Friday Agreement.

"Many of them are driven by sectional and extremist views on Brexit.

"By doing so, they have aligned with those in political unionism who have opposed and sought to undermine the full implementation of the GFA since its inception.

“That anti-democratic push back against the Good Friday Agreement since 1998 has resulted in the political crisis which now exists.

"This rejectionist campaign runs counter to the overwhelming will of our people who voted for the Good Friday Agreement in the north and south of Ireland.

"The Good Friday Agreement belongs to all the people of Ireland. It is the template for continued democratic transformation on the island.

"In recent months important public initiatives have been launched by civic nationalism, both north and south, calling on An Taoiseach and the Irish government to defend the Good Friday Agreement and the rights of citizens.

"This momentum should be broadened out to embrace all citizens who cherish rights and believe in the spirit of the Good Friday Agreement.

"I am calling on the widest cross section of civic society in Ireland to follow the democratic example of 1998 and now organise a popular national campaign to defend the Good Friday Agreement against its opponents, and to reclaim it for all of our people and future generations.”
