Mearbhaill ar an tAire McHugh maidir lena churamaí ó thaobh na Gaeilge - Peadar Tóibín TD

2 March, 2018 - by Peadar Tóibín TD

Dúirt urlabhraí Gaeilge Shinn Féin, an Teachta Peadar Tóibín, go bhfuil an tAire Joe McHugh ag teacht glan salach ar a chuid ráitis maidir leis na curamaí atá ag a roinn féin ó thaobh cur i bhfeidhm na Straitéise 20 Bliain.

Dúirt an Teachta Tóibín:

“Táimid ag fanacht leis an “Plean Gnímh 2017-2022” don Straitéis 20 Bliain na Gaeilge le beagnach bliain anuas. Níl fáil air in ainneoin geallúintí an Aire McHugh go mbeadh sé réidh ag deireadh Mhí Mhéan Fomhair, deireadh Mhí na Nollaig, agus arís faoi dheireadh Mhí Feabhra. Sháraigh sé ar gach gealltanas agus táimíd fós ag fanacht air.

“Cad is cúis leis an moill ollmhór seo? An é go bhfuil cúrsaí ina gcíor thuathail faoi láthair maidir le róil na roinne éagsúla? Dúirt an tAire McHugh i gcruinniú coiste i Mí na Samhna gur 'orainn atá cur i bhfeidhm an fhreagracht iomlán as cur i bhfeidhm na Stráitéise 20 Bliain don Ghaeilge 2010-2030'.

“Ach sa Dáil Dé Chéadaoin dúirt sé mar fhreagra ar mo cheist faoin Straitéis; (nach mbeadh) an Roinn amháin freagrach as an Ghaeilge. Tá an ról is mó maidir leis ag an Roinn Oideachais agus Scileanna”.

“D’admhaigh sé freisin nach bhfuair a Roinn moltaí go fóill ón Roinn Oideachais agus Scileanna maidir le plean ghníomh na Stráitéise.

“An dtuigeann an tAire an práinn atá i gceist leis an nGaeilge agus an Ghaeltacht a shlánú? Tá sé i mbun séanta an fhírinne. Is oth liom a rá nach bhfuil “athbheochan ollmhór ag dul ar aghaidh maidir leis an teanga” mar a deir McHugh. Géarchéim teanga atá againn.

“Caithidh an Aire McHugh an fód a sheasamh agus freagracht a thógáil mar is ceart. Níl sé maith go leor sleamhnú óna chuid curamaí agus an milleáin a chur ar na roinne eile. Tá sé de chumhacht aige cursaí a chomordú, a fhoireann a ghríosadh agus achmhainn chuí a éileamh le cinntiú go bhfoilseofaí an plean nua seo chomh luath agus gur féidir.”

Minister McHugh mixed up over his responsibilities to the Irish language - Peadar Tóibín TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson for the Irish language, Peadar Tóibín TD has said that Minister Joe McHugh is completely contradicting himself in statements concerning the responsibilities of his department in implementing the 20 Year Strategy for the Irish language.

Deputy Tóibín said:

“We have waiting for the “Action Plan 2017-2022” on the 20 Year Irish Language Strategy for almost a year now. There is no sign of it despite the promises from Minister McHugh that it would be ready by the end of September, the end of December, and again by the end of February. He has broken every promise and we are still waiting on it.

“What is the reason for this huge wait? Is it that there is total confusion as to the roles of the various departments? Minister McHugh said at a committee meeting in November that it is 'up to us to put into operation the total responsibility of implementing the 20 Year Strategy for the Irish Language 2020-2030'.

“Yet in the Dáil on Wednesday he said in reply to my question on the Strategey that; “the Department alone would not be responsible for Irish. The Department of Education and Skills has the biggest role”.

“He also admitted that his Department did not receive recommendtions yet from the Department of Education and Skills as regards the Action Plan for the strategy.

“Does the Minister understand the urgency there is in saving the Irish language and the Gaeltacht? He is in denial of the truth. I regret to say that there isn’t “an almighty revival of the Irish language” as the Minister claims. We are experiencing a language crisis.

“Minister McHugh has to stand up and take responsibility as is his due. It’s not good enough to slide away from his responsibilities and to blame other departments. It’s within his gift to coordinate matters, to galvanise his team and to demand sufficient resources in order to ensure that the new plan is published as soon as possible.”
