Responsibility to ensure North retains access to British and EU markets after Brexit lies firmly with British Government – Mary Lou McDonald TD
Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald TD has said Taoiseach Leo Varadkar must raise directly with British Prime Minister Theresa May her responsibility to ensure that are no barriers to trade between the North of Ireland and Britain when Britain exits the European Union.
Deputy McDonald said that the British government has responsibility to ensure the North also retains full access to the EU market.
Teachta McDonald made the call today following her meeting with Michel Barnier in Brussels on Monday.
The Dublin Central TD said;
“The only group threatening to block trade from the North to Britain is the British government.
“It is clear that the ball is now in British government’s court.
“It is in their gift to ensure there are no barriers to trade from the North to Britain and to ensure that the North retains full, unfettered, access to the British Market.
“The British Prime Minister must now demonstrate flexibility and bring forward workable solutions to ensure the North retains full access to both the EU and the British market.
“The British government must use its power to ensure there are no barriers to trade from the North to Britain when Britain leaves the European Union.
“The Taoiseach must raise this matter directly with Mrs May.”
