‘Appalling treatment’ of Social Welfare branch managers by Minister Doherty – John Brady TD

7 March, 2018 - by John Brady TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson for Employment Affairs & Social Protection, John Brady TD, has criticised Minister Doherty and her Department for their ‘appalling treatment’ of Branch Managers in 58 social welfare offices throughout the State.

Having engaged with the Branch Managers Association, Teachta Brady said:

“Between last October and January of this year, negotiations were underway between the Department of Employment Affairs & Social Protection and the Branch Managers Association.

"These talks came about after the Department had continuously promised Branch Managers that contracts would be re-negotiated.

“The negotiations centred on three main issues – a new contract, remuneration package and work model.

"The previous work model agreed in 2008 is no longer relevant as the work undertaken by Branch Managers far exceeds what was initially agreed ten years ago and this additional work carried out has been unpaid.

“The remuneration package was agreed in January and there is no reason for this to be stalled further. Minister Doherty needs to honour this agreement and the proposed new payment structure needs to be put in place.

“The Department not only walked away from negotiations in January but they have refused to continue dealing with the Association as a negotiating body citing competition law which makes no sense whatsoever.

“I am calling on Minister Doherty to do the right thing. The Branch Managers are looking for nothing more than fair play through a contract and work model that reflects the actual work they do and the remuneration package already agreed.

"This is a particularly embarrassing situation for Minister Doherty and her Department and they now need to go back to the table and finish negotiations with the Branch Managers Association.”
